Job Description

Ironwood is looking for Field Biologists for seasonal construction monitoring and survey work on various positions projects throughout Southern California and Southern Nevada.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Biological compliance monitoring during construction (80%)
  • Providing environmental training to construction crews
  • Preparing daily compliance reporting
  • Wildlife or botanical surveys (20%)
  • Using GPS technology, navigate and record data in the field
  • Data collection in the form of handheld and/or paper datasheet
  • Understanding and interpreting resource agency permit requirements
  • Web-based reporting
  • Responding to other project needs

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with construction crews in a collaborative manner
  • Ability to conduct surveys in rough terrain and/or weather conditions (i.e., extreme heat) in a team or independently
  • Demonstrated field experience with biological assessments, sensitive species protocol surveys, habitat assessments, wildlife identification, plant identification, and compliance monitoring
  • Good communication skills, high emotional intelligence, self-motivated, and a team player
  • Experience with the following species is desired: desert tortoise, small mammals, flat-tailed horned lizard, burrowing owl, nesting birds, special status plants in the desert southwest (CA or NV preferred)
  • Residents of southern CA, NV, or AZ
  • Ability to be flexible with changing tasks
  • Willingness to work on weekends, as needed
  • Ability to hike a minimum of 10 miles a day
  • Willingness to travel 90-100% of the time, as needed for projects
  • Can lift up to 35 lbs
  • Good driving record

Education and/or Experience

  • B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Environment, or similar degree
  • Demonstrated field experience of at least 2 years in the desert southwest (California or Nevada preferred).
