We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to support the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH), world renowned National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Bethesda, MD. Responsibilities

  • Work in a BSL-3 high containment environment.
  • Work in an Animal BSL-3 high containment environment.
  • Assist in conducting experiments to better understand the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the macaque animal model.
  • Perform immune cell isolation, cryo-preservation, cryo-recovery and flow cytometric analysis of human blood.
  • Perform immunohistochemical analysis of NHP and human lung tissue specimens, including method development and operating the slide scanner and organizing the resulting image files.
  • Perform a wide variety of procedures and techniques which may include, but are not limited to: cell culture, clinical/diagnostic microbiology, DNA analysis, DNA isolation, DNA purification, DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, gene cloning, manipulation of radioactive isotopes, natural product isolation, organic synthesis, peptide synthesis, protein analysis, RNA isolation, etc.
  • Process primate and murine tissue and sample for downstream applications.
  • Perform flow cytometric cell sorting and/or analysis of research scientist-supplied samples.
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments and their results and prepare the information resulting from these experiments for reports at laboratory-wide, NIH-wide, and for publication.
  • Perform quality control and decontamination of the various laboratory spaces.
  • Generate laboratory records to support laboratory research and independently perform necessary calculations.
  • Write reports of findings, state methods and procedures, including any modifications employed, specimens and materials involved, and results of experiments.
  • Collect, analyze, and discuss the results of each experiment with the Federal Task Leader (FTL) as part of the planning process for subsequent studies and present these findings in individual weekly meetings with the FTL as well as lab group meetings.
  • Maintain laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, etc., required to handle biological materials, carcinogens, recombinant protein materials, acids, biological wastes, etc.

Qualifications

  • BS degree or higher is required.
  • 2 or more years of working experience in a lab, BSL-3 lab and high containment animal facility experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of operating flow cytometers and step in single cell RNA seq procedures.
  • Effective and clear communication skills and the ability to work in a high stress environment.
  • Good ability to understand and troubleshoot complex equipment.
  • Ability to work in a team under supervision in ABSL-3 laboratory environments following SOPs.
  • Ability to work independently on computers, software, and with imaging data to organize and create large datasets for analysis and conduct the analysis.
  • Must be able to pass extensive background check and Public Trust 5 clearance.
  • Willing to work flexible hours, rare weekend work is possible.

  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, lab coats, safety glasses, and respirators (Disposable Respirator Mask N, P, R –95, 99,100; Powered Air Purified Respirator).
